There is no single language rule for every French university. The correct level depends on the language of instruction, degree level, admission route and institution. The most useful planning benchmark for a French-taught degree is B2, but some courses demand C1.

Admissions are only the beginning. A2/B1 French makes housing, healthcare, banking and administration easier. Usually the admission language requirement follows the programme language, so an English-taught degree may not require French proof. The institution’s own criteria control, and basic French remains valuable for daily life and internships.
B2 is a common requirement and is specifically important for first-year university admission through the DAP route, but programmes can set their own threshold and some competitive courses ask for C1 or higher.
