A major date matters: for first-time Skilled Worker applications under the current rules, English is usually required at CEFR B2 across reading, writing, speaking and listening. Older summaries that say B1 can now mislead new applicants.
GOV.UK lists several possible routes: an eligible UK school qualification, an eligible degree awarded by a UK institution, an overseas degree taught in English with the required Ecctis assessment, or an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT). Some applicants may fall under exemptions or may already have proved English in an earlier successful application.
If you held the Skilled Worker visa before 8 January 2026 and are extending or updating it, GOV.UK states that B1 applies and you normally do not need to prove English again. This is a narrow transitional position; it should not be copied into advice for a first-time applicant.
B2 means being able to understand the main ideas of complex text, interact with reasonable fluency, and produce clear, detailed language. A general IELTS band cannot be guessed as a substitute: the visa route, approved provider, test type, component scores and validity must all match Home Office requirements.
